How to legally homeschool in
CA
Option 1 - Private
School Affidavit
This option gives more independence and freedom in education. All
finances are covered by you. You are responsible for maintaining
records and obeying all private school laws. When filing the
Affidavit, you withdraw your children from school and request
their school records. You must keep the required records, but the
requirements of record-keeping are not burdensome.
Correspondence Schools are a variant of this option. A child must
still be enrolled in a private school which files the affidavit.
If the correspondence school doesn't file the Affidavit, you
must do it yourself.
Option 2 - Private Independent Study Programs
The private school handles administrative matters. Family
anonymity is protected. There are tuition fees and some
restriction on what curriculums are used and type of
record-keeping needed. You in sense become the teacher of the
private school. They file the affidavit.
Option 3 - Public School
Independent Study Programs or Charter Schools
If registering with a public ISP or Charter School, your child is
still in public school. Material are available on loan. There is
more restrictions through administrrative supervision, curriculum
guidelines, and record-keeping. You become a teacher's aide
and are assigned a credentialed teacher to oversee your
program.
Option 4 - Credentialed Teacher/Tutor
A parent with a current California teacher's credential may
teach his/her child under this option. The parent can only teach
for the grades and subject their credential covers. Parents can
also hire a credentialed tutor for their child.
